It is known as the perfect desert because of the total absence of humidity and rain, a climate that has existed since the Spanish invasion in 1500. From San Pedro of Atacama there is an excursion that goes to Caspana, a village famous for its plantations in the canyon.; to the bell tower of Ayquina, the only one in Chile with 5 storeys and to the spectacular Moon and Mars valleys, perhaps the most famous places in Chile. Here, sculpting due to rain water that fell many years ago has been preserved thanks to the low humidity and salinity. The salar (salt lake ) of Atacama, with its population of Chilean flamingos, is one of the most beautiful and interesting in the country. The volcanoes, too, are very interesting, 500 metres high and so too are the spectacular lakes just over the border with Bolivia: the “blanca” and the “verte” whose waters are thick, foamy and full of arsenic.

The National Park of Torres del Paine, considered as the most important and most well organised in Chile, is the centre of Patagonia. The climate is unusually mild and the famous expanses of red rock are completely free of clouds. Lakes of various colours, their shores crowded with guanachi, are shadowed by the bastions of Torres, which are so much like our Dolomites. Trekking is a way to reach the rear face of the Grey glacier and its lake, so called because of the colour of the water rich in lime. Here, in the cold rain forest, reign the spectacular icebergs. Strong gusts of wind are capable of lifting the water from the surface of a lake and carrying it hundreds of metres.

Departing from Arica, the northern most city in Chile, and scaling the Andes, at more than 4500 metres, you meet the enormous snow-covered volcanoes and a vegetation that consists mainly of cactus and strange flowers, able to grow and nourish themselves thanks to the rains that “El Nino” brought after over 100 years. Lamas, alpacia, vigogne and guanachi live here, in these areas characterised by little 17th century churches and villages long ago abandoned by the Aymara indios. Breathtaking mountain views frame the “salars”, the salt lakes, bustling with flamingos.

It has always been the door to the Chilean Patagonia. The size of Umbria, it is characterised by wooden brightly coloured houses; those nearest the sea being built on stilts due to the high tide (7 metres). The inhabitants are either farmers, breeders or fishermen,. They are the most well known fishermen and sailors in South America, accustomed to a cold, rough sea from which they can pluck the most delicious salmon and the tastiest sea food. Beautiful and fascinating are the many varieties of wooden church. There are 150 of them, 9 of which have been classed as national monuments. The climate is ideal and of a forgotten time.

And of course, the condor, the red-necked vulture, the mountain viscacia (rodent) the guanachi that are breast feeding milk, ducks, foxes, huemol Andes goats, pink flamingos.
